Enterprise Horticulture Fieldday

wpe2.jpg (7994 bytes) Horticulture Extension Agent, Brad Bergefurd welcomes over 120 in attendance to the OSU Enterprise Center 5th Annual Horticulture Fieldnight.
     
wpe3.jpg (7621 bytes) The first speaker of the evening was Jim McClendon of McClendon Pepper Harvesters of Tulia, Texas.
    
wpe4.jpg (5403 bytes) The crowd then laoded waggons where they visited over 500 research and demonstration plots at the Enterprise Center field trials located at Southern State College in Hillisboro, Ohio.
     
wpe5.jpg (6518 bytes) One of the stops was a freshmarket processing cabbage variety trials. This experment helps growers to identify suitable cultivars for this emerging market.
   
wpe6.jpg (6397 bytes) Over 15 different cabbage cultivars are tested for yield and disease resistance as well as internal and external marketabilty attributes.
    
wpe7.jpg (7962 bytes) The Enterprise Center also tests 20 cultivars of fresh market and specialty Heir Loom tomatoes for their production, marketing and quality characterstics.
wpe8.jpg (8299 bytes) Several trials are done in conjunction with state specialist from The Ohio State University, Columbus and Wooster campuses.

wpeB.jpg (6457 bytes) The center also has an extensive collection of pumpkin research trials including: cultivar evaluations, disease control, insect control, trickle irrigation and plastic mulch combinations and the use of cover crops for the weed control
   
wpeC.jpg (7493 bytes) Opportunity exists for Southern Ohio growers to produce fall ornamental crops for the expanding halloween market. Here Brad Bergefurd updates the crowd on the ornamental corn evaluation trials.
