Summary of Results:
Nine varieties
were transplanted on
The first
harvest was
The top
performing varieties (boxes per acre of extra large + large fruit) in the first
harvest were: Revolution and significantly better than other varieties except
for PS992 7141. Karisma also produced nearly 200
boxes/A but
not significantly better than other varieties except for Palidan
and RPP20809 (see Table 1.).
The greatest difference was in the Jumbo and Xtra
large categories with little difference among varieties in the large size with RPP
20809 having significantly less large size fruit than Revelation and Karisma.
The top 3 varieties had 194 to 288 boxes/A of Xtra
Large + Large fruit which is a significant improvement
from 2007 and similar to previous years.
For total
harvest (3), the old standby #9 Paladin was on top but not significantly better
than other varieties except RPP 20809. Varieties producing near or in excess of
500 bushel/A of extra + large fruit were Paladin,
Revolution, PSS9927141 and Declaration (see table 2). (#3).
There was no significant difference in yield among other varieties but in
practical terms, yield ranged from 431 boxes/A (Aristotle) to 550 boxes/A
(Paladin) (see table 2). Interestingly, the top 3 varieties in 2006 were PX9927141,
9928002 and Paladin (see table 2).
Table 3 shows
the percentage of marketable fruit in the large size categories (%
marketable large (represents the number of xtra large
and large fruit compared to all fruit harvested) for the first harvest and
all harvests. Percent marketable represents every size category that can
be sold from extra large down to the select category. Revolution,
PS992 7141, Karisma and Declaration were the only
varieties with 50% or more of its fruit in the larger size categories for the
first harvest. For total harvest, there was no significant difference among
varieties which ranged from 35 to 44% of their fruit harvested in the marketable
large size categories.
